Exhibition opening

Over 20 Sahaja Yogis attended the opening of Sahaja Yogi Andrew Bonneau’s exhibition, Theatrum Imaginum, at Lennox St. Gallery in Melbourne on Saturday, 19 September 2026.

Mittagong Sahaja Yogi Andrew Bonneau spent three years developing the exhibition, creating intricate themes and elements through handmade models, working drawings, painted colour studies and larger finished works. The exhibition brings together the results of this extensive creative process, with the larger pieces displayed alongside examples of Andrew’s working drawings and painted studies.

Following the opening, the Yogis enjoyed a collective meal together. The weekend continued on Sunday with a beautiful Shri Ganesha Puja shared with the Victorian Sahaja Yoga Collective.

About Andrew

Andrew’s residencies include: Core Program at the Water Street Atelier, Grand Central Atelier, New York, and the William Fletcher Rome Residency – British School at Rome. He has held many solo exhibitions around the country, and has works in a number of collections including: National Portrait Gallery, Canberra – State Library of NSW – Macquarie Bank, Sydney – Pymble Ladies College, Sydney – Sydney Grammar School, and has been a finalist in the Archibald Prize.

“Andrew has travelled internationally and studied persistently. His artistic processes rarely vary. Every life model, every subject, architectural detail rarely vary. Photography and digital reproductions are not involved. Every life model, every object, architectural detail are captured minutely and laboriously.

The large-scale, multi figure, allegorically laden compositions coalesce within the artist’s studio. It is where imaginary worlds are created, and the seemingly disparate elements, traversing the limits of space and time, are brought together into a single compositionally coherent whole.

Master-like Andrew controls the source and direction of light, giving weight and volume to individual objects and unifying them with the confines of the picture plane. Pygmalion-like he breathes life into the illusory environments, which arrest the viewers’ gaze and suspend their breath in meditative contemplation.”

Dr Eugene Barilo von Reisberg – Melbourne based scholar, art historian and gallery director.

Featuring 73 full colour images, including many full and double-page details, this publication is a visually rich chronicle of a significant development in Andrew’s artistic practice.

Including an introduction by Dr Eugene Barillo von Reisberg- art historian and director of Lennox Street Gallery in Melbourne, this book also features an essay by Dr Christopher Allen- art historian and Head Art Critic for The Australian, and an interview with Andrew by artist Michelle Hiscock.

It places Bonneau’s recent work in the context of the history of allegorical figure painting, as well as exploring his creative process, from sketchbook drawings to sculpting architectural motifs, making drawings from the life model, colour studies, and then making the final paintings.
